New Poem: "Every Leaf A Flower"
Written for Claire, more than a decade ago, but unpublished-- til now.
Article voiceover
As my niece is making her way as a Freshman in college on a trip to Rome, I cannot help but remember when I was a Freshman on my own brief sojourn to the root and beating heart of Western Civilization. Things were never the same for me after, for good and ill. I was anxious at her going, at her growing, and becoming an adult, like me. This poem was written when she was still only ten, and I had graduated from college but not yet left the new family home. I miss that happy old red-brick duplex. I think many in my family do. But without further ado, the Poem Itself:
“Every Leaf A Flower” By Tyler Morrison
A decade sounds long— Unless it’s your life. At ten years, my niece Still skips along a sidewalk. There’s a Spring in her step, And the Summer’s in her hair; The air she breathes is older, Full of crisp October. Seated on the balcony, I suddenly feel my age: A young man too old For artless, harmless play. Yet seeing Claire now, I clearly remember: Every leaf, said Camus, In autumn's a flower.
