TEXAS SNOW
by Tyler Morrison
Summer turns to sunset;
I cannot turn away.
This vision brings the onset
Of young wonder and dismay.
September leaves
Do as they please
Just like my dreams:
They turn their colors
And then scatter in the breeze.
And come October,
I might find myself sober.
For now I’m drunk on love,
And love lost is the hangover.
After November,
I can’t imagine or remember
What to expect except
The summer’s end all over.
The vestige of warmth
Withers in the winter.
Will this remnant
Of endearments
Endure December?
I just don’t know,
But I don’t trust her love
So much as Texas snow…
I just can’t know,
But I don’t trust her love
So much as Texas snow.
BACKGROUND:
This “new poem” is in fact another adaptation of old lyrics I wrote many years ago. I completed the original draft at the end of high school, which is perhaps why it seems so “young” and perhaps maudlin in outlook and perspective to me now.
At the time, I was still a rank amateur at playing the guitar. I wouldn’t learn how to play well enough for my purposes until I was at least a sophomore in college, and from my junior year onward I became a much better singer/songwriter. I still know the melody of this song well enough to sing it a cappella, but I never did put it to music with the guitar. Other (in my opinion, better) songs took my focus. I may post some more of those lyrics over the coming weeks.
So I adapted the high school with better wording, meter, and “theming” so that it can be appreciated as a poem in its own right.
This is a fabulous poem, no matter when you wrote it! It expresses the feelings perfectly, and speaks to all of us who are lucky in love or not. Thanks!
