CHAPTER 11
Isaac Shinseki #5:
The View From Outside
Isaac could take his stand tonight and then finally go to bed. Sleepy time was calling again, almost incessantly now, and he needed to answer that call soon. But not before he saved Bobby’s life.
“Ike, I am patiently awaiting your orders.” Cassie swayed back and forth, nervously.
“Ok,” he said. “Keep watch on the Russians out back and hold them off however you can. Monitor the audio feeds inside and outside the Rusty Schooner. Give me current video inside the bar on screen one and video out in front of the bar on screen two.”
“Done.”
And it was. The camera up in the rafters was picking up tons of smoke and not much else.
Then he made out four or five armed figures. The Russian backup, apparently? Bobby was crouched behind the bar, using the unconscious bartender as a human shield.
Then Isaac glanced over at the second monitor, and he freaked the fuck out. He peed a little bit, and not because of all the uppers in his system. Isaac held his bowels in check, but only barely.
There was a heavily armored, pearl colored limo parked like an overgrown great white shark just outside the bar. No, no, no, no!
Isaac panicked.
The car looked like some insane image from an Ozzy Ahoy toon, like a creamy version of Black Sabre’s Night Tank. The windows were so tinted that he could only see a driver up front... and a large passenger in the private bubble twenty feet behind.
Oh Shinto. This was not good.
Could that be… could that be Fyodor Fucking Vitsin himself?
Was the Butcher of East Envy paying a personal visit to the Zadnitsa slums, when he should have been partying at some posh Moscowtown whorehouse?
This meant business. Bad business. And the Butcher’s business was butchery, plain and simple.
Unplug, Isaac. Jacket out. Get gone. Vam! Sleep, and then vam!
It seemed impossible to do anything right tonight. It seemed impossible to do anything at all.
